A dwindling breed ...

The person who gives more back than he takes is fast becoming a rare thing.

I salute the life and legacy of Ed Mirvish, MBE - businessman, impresario, and philanthropist.

Rest well - and thanks for a life rich in giving and good works.

Says something when you’re known as “Honest Ed” and there’s isn’t the slightest hint of irony about it.

Very True. One of the things we miss about TO is going to see Mirvish productions.

We never really shopped at his store, but the man was very generous and consistent with good works to his community.

Aeneas,
My first visit to your blog. Lived in Toronto for many years myself and from everything I know Ed was a true mench. I didn't know he had passed until I saw it here.

Now for something well OT from this thread.... Understanding that we have beat it to the ground on Red's site already and knowing that I can be annoying to you, I hope you wont take this the wrong way. I am merely posting it in the interest of increasing your understanding of my view point on these things - India in particular.

So, if you have the interest or the time I would encourage you to check out two things.

- The first is a short read on line at:

http://india_resource.tripod.com/colonial.html

The second is a reccomendation to read - or read about the book:

Late Victorian Holocausts: El Nino Famines and the Making of the Third World by Mike Davis.

I have not read this book - but I have read several reviews and exerpts - this one in particular is very thurough and informative.

http://books.guardian.co.uk/reviews/history/0,6121,424896,00.html

Our discussions at Reds have motivated me to finally order it just today off Amazon.

(As an aside, I work with a couple of South Asian musical artists as part of my profession - which is what has driven my interest into that part of the world for the last several years.)

Based on your position on the topic of the BE - which you have made quite clear to me recently - you may well find these items of no use or interest to you, but I felt compelled to bring them to your attention none the less.

Make of them - and me - what you will.
Ian

Honest Ed knew how to make money, the key to being able to be generous.
